An under-threat community garden has been chosen as the best of its kind in east London.

Wild Note Arts created the space at the rear of the 491 Gallery in Grove Green Road, Leytonstone, but the building has now been sold to developers.

The garden remains under a preservation order, but is under threat from a plan to build flats on the site.

The East London Garden Society last week chose the space, which is used for events including talks and performances, as Best Community Garden.

James Moriarty, of Wild Note Arts, said: “We’re really chuffed.

“It’s particularly apt because the garden is in danger of being demolished and having flats built on it.

“We like the garden to be used as much by the community as the birds and the bees.”
The garden is viewable from the railway bridge south of Leytonstone station or by appointment.
