A headteacher has been sacked over "financial irregularities" at his school.

Mark Mahoney was suspended from his job at Winston Way Primary School, Ilford, in December while an investigation was carried out by Redbridge Council.

The authority has now confirmed he has been dismissed and Debra Webb will continue to be acting executive headteacher in the short-term.

Mr Mahoney has led the school, which is in Winston Way, since it opened in 2007.

Redbridge Council has not released further details about his dismissal and will not say if it has contacted police.

A spokesman said: "Mark Mahoney, headteacher of Winston Way Primary School, has been dismissed following the discovery of financial irregularities...

"Recruitment to the headteacher post will take place as soon as is practicable."

Mr Mahoney and his fellow senior staff were praised in an Ofsted report last year for their "relentless" commitment to improving the school.

The Guardian has asked Redbridge Police if its officers are investigating and is awaiting a response.
