Plans to build 91 homes and a brand new ‘bespoke’ health centre on the site of a mental health hospital in Walthamstow will be considered for approval next week.

The final designs for the development at Thorpe Coombe Hospital include 66 flats, 25 three and four bed houses and a state of the art health ‘hub’.

If the plans are accepted six blocks will be erected, between two and five storeys each, on the Forest Road site.

If permission is granted all buildings will be demolished and rebuilt with the exception of the listed Thorpe Coombe House building, which will be converted into 17 homes.

Applicant North East London NHS Health Trust said they will provide a community health complex, named the Thorpe Coombe Centre which will be part funded with the money from the residential units.

It will remain as a mental health facility.

The designs show that if accepted, residents of the new homes will be provided with private space, in the form of balconies, gardens and communal areas.

A total of 59 car parking spaces are proposed with a further 121 cycle parking spaces.

However, residents would be prohibited from obtaining permits to park in any future parking zones that may be introduced by the Council.

A further 53 spaces are allocated for the health centre, 43 of which are to be in a basement beneath the structure accessed via a new ramp off Forest Road.

The existing site entrances will be closed and new accesses provided, on Forest Road serving a car park at the rear of the health centre.

A new entrance is proposed on Shernhall Street to serve the majority of the new build.

Some of the current hospital services will be moved away from the site with the main ‘hub’ being split between Thorpe Coombe and two other sites.

There will be an attached condition that the health centre must be complete before the first resident can move in.

Plans will be considered by the council’s planning committee at the Town Hall in Walthamstow, on Tuesday.
