The first commissioned street art has been completed in Walthamstow High Street.

In recent months, Wood Street Walls has given home-grown graffiti artists the chance to make their mark on the borough by pairing them up with businesses and arranging for murals to be painted on walls.

The latest one, which is 26m long, was revealed this weekend at The Mall.

Making his mark at the Walthamstow shopping centre was renowned artist Fanakapan who incorporated giant foil balloons as part of his signature style at the shopping centre’s car park area.

The Leytonstone artist was commissioned by The Mall Walthamstow to transform an area of the car park and his work features the recreation of giant balloons spelling out the words ‘deflation and creation’ with a hidden nod to the E17 area.

Marketing Manager of The Mall, Rebecca Marjoram, said: “This was an amazing first for the centre to commission a local and well known graffiti artist and the opportunity to work with this great local organisation to deliver a unique, visual experience to our customers here at The Mall.”

The Wood Street Walls project was launched in September and the striking work at The Mall Walthamstow will be the 13th and longest wall of art to be revealed to date.

Since launching Wood Street Walls has been responsible for transforming bland buildings, industrial estates and streets in the borough and has the backing of Waltham Forest council.

Wall Street Walls co-founder Mark Clack believes E17 could be as famous for street art as Wynwood Walls in Miami.

He said: "We're really excited to be working in collaboration with The Mall as it's the first mural to be installed on Walthamstow High Street. We hope this will be the start of many more to come.

"During the installation of Fanakapan's amazing artwork, it was fantastic to see the positive response from the visitors of The Mall who were surprised to see a formally blank wall take shape.
