The family of a 17-year-old boy who died in a canal have watched footage of his final moments in which it does not appear that anyone was in the water to help.

Jurors tried to turn away and the family of Jack Susianta looked upset as the brief clips from a police helicopter video was shown at his inquest.

Statements such as: "Are you happy for us to go in?" and "Need an answer" accompanied the footage that was played at St Pancras Coroner's Court, central London.

At another point, someone was heard saying: "There is a guy with a canoe, can we shout at him to go and get him?" about a rower who was on the water.

A later clip showed some waders going into the water.

Mr Susianta, a student from Hackney, east London, died in a canal at east London's Walthamstow Marshes in July 2015.

Witnesses have claimed the police refused to enter the water to save him, but the Metropolitan Police deny this, saying one officer risked his life and entered the water.

A voice on the footage says that Mr Susianta has refused a line and "intentionally submerged himself in the water".

Another voice noted: "He (Mr Susianta) has gone under the water. We cannot see him any more. He has been under for about a minute now."

At one point Mary Hassell, the senior coroner for inner north London, turned to the jury and said: "Members of the jury, you do need to watch this."

After the clips had been shown, the coroner later said: "Members of the jury, you will see that again.

"Part of it will be you making a decision about exactly what happened at the time that Jack was submerged - that will be very important."
