A unique theatre production at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, in Tottenham, will tell the real-life stories of the refugee crisis through music and dance.

Over the past few years, the media has been dominated by seemingly endless images and horror stories of thousands of adults and children risking their lives to travel to new countries and leave behind their war-torn homes in places such as Syria and Iraq.

Recently, there have been various news reports on the newly-elected President of the USA, Donald Trump, as he has attempted to ban members of the Muslim faith from entering America.

What Are You Doing Here, Mate? is the latest production from the Phoenix Community Care charity, which is based in Enfield, and also Pamodzi Productions.

The show will fuse theatre, breakdance, ballet, tap and African dance to bring three personal stories of asylum seekers to life.

Writer and producer Roni Edwards, founder of Pamodzi Creatives, says the show was created as a response to seeing the image of the drowned three-year-old Syrian refugee, Alan Kurdi, wash up on a beach in Turkey in September 2015.

He says: “I wrote the piece as a creative response to Alan Kurdi 's death. As artists, we should be at the forefront of trying to depict the 'stories behind the stories' and challenge people to empathise with an issue that we can easily disconnect from.”

The cast will be made up of 40 actors, dancers and visual artists, and is set to an eclectic musical score and visuals, aiming to reflect the international nature of the crisis.

Set in a detention centre on the fictional island off the coast of Africa, transcripts have been gathered from refugees to focus on the frustration and anxiety that people go through while seeking asylum in a foreign country, even after a life-threatening journey.

The first storyline will use transcripts from Sierra Leonean refugees, who highlight their anxiety in the UK detention system, and their treatment within this process. The second is built around interviews with John Bosco, a gay Ugandan who now works for the UK charity Friends Without Borders, and will explores homophobia within conservative African cultures.

The third is based on a female Syrian refugee called Doa, and will look at attitudes towards refugees and the finale will depict the uncomfortable desperation that some refugees and asylum seekers experience.

After the show, there will also be a question and answer session with the lead cast members, to give the audience the opportunity to find out more about the show and also about the refugee crisis.
