A man’s body was found hanging in the basement of a petrol station this morning.

Police were called to the BP garage in Leyton High Road near Leyton Midland Road station shortly after 7am today.

Police remain at the site which is cordoned off.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said they were called to assist police at 7.40am and one engine attended.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers were called at 7.08am on Friday August 25 to a garage in High Road, E10 to concerns of the safety of a member of staff.

“On entering the premises the body of man was found hanging in a basement. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Next of kin have been informed. Formal identification awaits.

“A post mortem will be scheduled in due course.

“The death is being treated as unexplained, but at this early stage police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

“Enquires continue.”

A spokesman for MRH which manages the BP garage said: “We are supporting the police as they work to establish what has happened.

"As such, it’s not appropriate to go into further detail at this time. The store will remain closed today and we ask customers not to visit.”
