A visit to Canterbury proved to be a tough assignment for Wapping ladies Firsts as they went down to a 2-0 defeat on Saturday.

Wapping have struggled to get going since the turn of 2018 and were slow out of the traps as the hosts enjoyed the better of the early exchanges.

They pushed the defence back from the outset and moved the ball around well in attack as a shaky Wapping toiled to compete.

It didn’t take long for Canterbury’s dominance to be rewarded as a defensive error allowed them a clear sight of goal from inside the D which they duly dispatched.

The go-ahead goal only served to imbue Canterbury with further confidence and the continued to push forward for the remainder of the half.

Wapping would go in at the break chasing a two-goal deficit when Canterbury again scored from inside the D.

After a rousing half-time team talk, Wapping did come out with a renewed attacking drive and found some joy down the wings.

Becky Hart and Bee Armstrong were particularly incisive in their forays into the Canterbury half.

However, when Wapping did manage to create openings their finishing was found wanting and they ultimately failed to register in the defeat.

It was a better weekend for the Seconds as they eased to a 3-0 win over Harpenden Firsts thanks in no small part to a Charlotte Holt brace, which added to Rachel Haseloff’s effort.

The Thirds were also victorious, winning 4-1 over Braintree thanks to goals from Sandy Akinbolu, Babs Lo Giuduce, Becky Harris and Holly Marven.

Meanwhile, Wapping’s Fourths were forced to settle for a share of the spoils as Hattie Guant found the net in a 1-1 stalemate with Basildon Seconds.

The point was a welcome one as Wapping came from behind to ensure a Basildon side behind them on goal difference alone didn’t pull away in the league.

With the men’s Firsts not in action at the weekend, it fell to the Seconds to carry the fight for Wapping.

They did so in impressive fashion as a man-of-the-match performance from Nick McLaren led them to a 2-0 win over Havering Firsts.

His display lay the foundation for Matt Hyden and Sam Gilliat to find the net in the routine win.

The Thirds followed in their clubmates’ footsteps as they made light work of a clash with Sudbury Firsts to secure a 3-1 win.

Hamish Forbes and Brad Wherry helped themselves to goals and Tom Rose capped an impressive individual display by getting on the scoresheet.

Their was no such joy for the Fourths and they went down to a heavy 6-1 defeat at the hands of Letchworth Seconds.

Santi Jaureguizar provided the only plus point with a goal.
