Mad Hatters photos plea

Having grown up in Walthamstow in the 1950s and 60s, I’m hoping some of your readers may be able to help.

After the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, the local CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) entered the Walthamstow Carnival the following year with a colourful float depicting the crisis.

This was done via the story of the Mad Hatters Tea party from Alice in Wonderland, with the main characters wearing huge papier maché heads.

The USA was depicted as the Mad Hatter (not much has changed in 55 years); USSR was the March Hare and Britain as The Dormouse.

I (at the age of 12) was Alice in a white dress and blue sash etc.

It was such an unusual float depicting a political event and making a statement about it in such a way, that we won and were presented with a huge silver rose bowl.

We were so excited that we spent the rest of the afternoon celebrating in the local pub (it was the 1960s), but somehow didn’t take any photos.

I have made inquiries re: the archives, in both Walthamstow and Hackney but have drawn a blank, so am turning to your readers to ask if anyone has any pictures of us on the winning float?
