A stand-off between police and a man suspected of swallowing drugs has ended after he spent 47 days in custody without going to the toilet.

Lamarr Chambers, 24, was arrested in Harlow on January 17, following a drugs bust by Operation Raptor West, Essex Police's, gang crime unit for Harlow, Epping Forest, Brentwood and Thurrock.

Officers from the team had begun tweeting what they described as "poo watch" updates after Chambers refused to go to toilet while in custody.

However, police decided to release him on bail on Monday "following medical and legal advice", after he went an incredible 47 days without a bowel movement.

The Crown Prosecution Service discontinued charges of intent to supply a Class A drug and driving matters, but Chambers was rearrested by Essex Police on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug.

He was taken by police car, in company with a medical professional, to hospital for treatment.

Deputy Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington took the decision to release Chambers from custody.

β€œOn the basis of all the medical evidence in this case it is most appropriate, both in the interests of Mr Chambers and of justice, to ensure he receives the hospital treatment he needs,” he said.

Police had applied for custody extensions at seven court hearings as they waited for Chambers, of Brixton, London, to go to the toilet.

Officers said Chambers was seen daily by doctors, was constantly watched and routinely supplied with food and water.
