AN award-winning author will mark the 50th birthday of a library with a talk about its history.

Dr Paul C Doherty OBE, will explore how Fulwell Cross Library has changed over half a century and discuss the importance of public libraries on Tuesday, March 20.

The library in High Street, Barkingside, was opened on March 20, 1968, by Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer, the lieutenant of Greater London. The Grade II listed building was designed by Sir Fredrick Gibberd, the renowned modernist architect.

The public is invited to come along from 6.30pm when refreshments will be served before the talk at 7pm.

Dr Doherty, who is also headmaster of Trinity Catholic High School in Woodford Green, is the author of more than 100 novels and history books.

The Barkingside library will also host two free events for children to mark the anniversary.

On Saturday, March 17, attendees will be able to face paint and build a memory tree from 11am to 3pm.

On the day of Dr Doherty’s talk, children will be able to build a memory tree and snakes and ladders from 4.30pm to 6pm. Visitors will be able to add a leaf to the memory tree.
