WORK on a “hugely impressive” public swimming pool and leisure centre is nearing completion.

Redbridge Council announced that the construction of “impressive facilities” at Mayfields Leisure Centre will be completed in the second week of May.

The new amenities include a six-lane, 25 metre pool, spectator seating, a multi-purpose studio, a 40 station high-tech gym and changing village.

The council has invested £4 million in the centre, with an additional National Lottery award of £750,000 injection from the Sport England Strategic Facilities Fund.

The centre will be open to the public from 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday and from 8am to 6pm on weekends.

Cllr Jas Athwal, Labour leader of the Redbridge Council says: “I am ambitious for Redbridge and promised we would deliver the very best swimming and sports provision for our residents.

“With the completion of these impressive facilities, alongside our refurbishment of Loxford School pool and plans for a state-of-the-art pool and gym complex at Wanstead High School, we are without a doubt delivering on our pledge.

“The sheer scale and quality of the facilities and the programme of activities is hugely impressive.

“Helping people take control of their health and wellbeing is very important and I’m very proud of the work we are doing to deliver the first-class swimming and leisure facilities across the borough for residents, of all ages, to use.”

Vision, Redbridge Council’s leisure partner, will run the complex.

Centre users will also have access to school sports facilities outside of school hours, including an all-weather pitch with new floodlights, multi-use games area and a sports hall.

Charles Johnston, director of property at Sport England says: “Thanks to the £750,000 of National Lottery funding, people living in Mayfield will have a top quality sports facilities right on their doorsteps.

“Offering a brand new pool and a high tech gym, it will deliver a quality experience to both Mayfield students and the wider community.

“I wish Redbridge Council, Mayfield School and Vision Redbridge every success when the new centre opens.”
