A primary school head teacher who led a school out of special measures to an “outstanding” Ofsted rating has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Shane Tewes, head teacher of Woodside Primary Academy in Walthamstow, has been shortlisted for head of the year at the Times Educational Supplement teaching award.

Mr Tewes took charge of Woodside in 2014, when the school was in special measures after inspectors had rated it “inadequate”.

However, he was able to spark a quick turnaround at the school, getting the special measures lifted within one term, before it was recognised as “outstanding” by Ofsted just two years later.

The annual awards ceremony will take place on June 22, when winners will be revealed.

Mr Tewes said: “I feel privileged to be nominated for this award as it reflects the dedication and passion of the pupils, parents and staff.”

Woodside is now statistically within the top 5 per cent ok all primary schools in the country in terms of pupil progress, with 88 per cent at expected levels for reading, and 94 per cent at expected levels for maths.

The school, is part of REAch2, the largest primary school trust in the UK.

Sir Steve Lancashire, CEO of REAch2 said: “We are absolutely delighted that Shane’s brilliance has been recognised.

“He is a truly world-class head teacher and has transformed Woodside in just a few short years.

“He is the one educationalist that I look up to, and as one of our pupils said: ‘he makes dreams become reality’.”
