Two nurses have been nominated for the most prestigious awards in the sector for their work within communities in east London.

Geraldine Rodgers has been shortlisted in the nursing older people category at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Nurse Awards, while Emma Berry has been nominated for the mental health practice award.

The pair both work at Goodmayes Hopsital, in Barley Lane, Goodmayes, which offers mental health services and is operated by North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT).

Ms Berry received her nomination for work as the trust’s Young Persons Home Treatment Team manager.

The service is designed to support young people in their own homes and can help 12 patients at any one time across Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Havering and Barking and Dagenham.

The team is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals including doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists.

Ms Rodgers has been shortlisted for her work on the Significant 7 training programme for care homes.

The project was developed following research that identified an opportunity to support care home staff through training.

The package included a toolkit to help care workers to identify the health needs of residents and an interactive training session delivered by healthcare professionals in the care home setting.

Ms Rodgers said: “It’s a significant honour to receive a nomination from the RCN.

“The standard of entrants this year was exceptionally high and the fact that the Significant 7 project has made it to final-five shortlist is testament to how well received it has been. “

The annual Nurse Awards, now in its 31st year, take place at the Westminster Park Plaza in on July 3.

The ceremony recognises outstanding nursing in a wide range of specialties, including learning disability nursing, child health, cancer nursing and mental health nursing.

They are widely regarded as the highest accolade for nurses in the UK.

All the shortlisted entrants will be invited to present their initiative to a panel of judges in London in May, before the panel decides on category winners, as well as an overall “nurse of the year”.
