PLANS to pave over a green community space for use as a council car park are moving forwards.

In early March the residents of Marlescroft Way in Loughton expressed concerns about plans to flatten a large portion of the common land opposite the road and replace it with a car park for staff at the council’s Oakwood Hill depot.

Just shy of 800 people signed a petition in opposition to proposals and expressed dismay at the potential loss of green space.

Leigh Strong wrote: “Yet again, the council putting their needs over the residents who pay their wages.

“A better solution must be sought, as the loss of the green space to this area will be hugely detrimental.”

Despite the early unpopularity of plans which were at that point based largely on speculation, Stace Construction and Property Consultants have prepared car park plans on behalf of Epping Forest District Council.

The site earmarked for destruction.

The documents argue the road’s capacity for 12 parked cars is not enough, with Essex County Council rules requiring 56 standard and three disabled off-street parking bays for a development of the Oakwood Hill depot’s size.

The car park would be open to the public on weekends, with access coming through Marlescroft Way.

Five trees will be felled to make way for the build if it is approved by district councillors.
