More than 17,000 people braved soaring temperatures to attend Leyton Carnival.
Pupils from local schools kicked off the festivities with a vibrant parade that showcased cultures from all around the world with spectacular floats and costumes.
Oak Hill Primary wore Aztec-inspired costumes and Buxton School built a Jamaica-themed float.
Others decided to go for a more political theme with Riverly Primary and Willow Brook creating costumes to commemorate the centenary of women’s suffrage.
Cllr Paul Douglas, junior cabinet member for culture, said: “Leyton Carnival got our summer events programme off to a flying start. With great music, comedy performances and a colourful carnival parade it was the perfect way to enjoy the hot weather”.
Leyton Cricket Ground hosted performances from 1980s funk icons Shakatak and Heatwave, as well as a performance by the reggae band The Dualers.
The Leyton Carnival is only the first of six major ‘Get Together’ community events to be held around Waltham Forest this year including the Walthamstow Garden Party and the Waltham Forest Mela.
