HUNDREDS of messages of love and support have been shared following Stephen Darby’s announcement that he has retired from football with immediate effect after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Bolton News readers, fans and friends have pledged to stand alongside the Wanderers defender as he battles the incurable condition.

Prayers and words of kindness have been shared across social media on behalf of the 29-year-old and his family.

Supporters have already begun proposing match fundraisers to raise money for MND and for Darby's family.

Heartfelt messages included: “Very sad news for Stephen and his family. We question what it is all about when something like this happens. Enjoy every day and be kind to each other. Life is tenuous and we do not know what is round the corner. This young guy has lived the dream. Stay strong.”

Others voiced their gratitude for the way in which Darby has ‘worn the Bolton shirt with pride’.

Darby arrived at Bolton in the summer of 2017. The club's manager Phil Parkinson described him as an 'outstanding professional and a fantastic person'.

One reader said: "I hope the fans get behind him and give him the support, love and warmth he deserves.

"All the best Stephen and thank you for your efforts on behalf of BWFC. Stay strong mate!"

“Terrible news”, another said. “Puts everything into perspective. There but for the grace of God go all of us. Wishing you all the best in this next phase of life Stephen.”

Liverpool-born Darby confirmed the news of his retirement from professional football in an official statement on Tuesday morning.

Darby was given the diagnosis last week by specialists and has asked for privacy as he comes to terms with the non-curable condition.

Further messages of sympathy include: "Awful diagnosis for someone so young. Hoping for significant medical advances in the coming years."

And a Wanderers supporter said: “I am sure that everybody connected with our club, supporters and staff, wish Stephen and his family all the very best for the future. We will always be there to help in anyway we can, it’s what this club does. Good luck pal."

Messages of support have also come in from team-mates, past and present, from the football world.
