Passersby came to the aid of a wheelchair-bound pensioner who found his route home from the shops blocked by a fallen tree.

The man, who does not wish to be named, was faced with the obstacle when trying to make his way from Morrisons in Chingford on Tuesday afternoon (September 25).

Keith Foster snapped the photos after speaking to the man who told him he was forced to make a 15 minute journey along the main road to get to the supermarket in Salisbury Hall Gardens.

Luckily, fellow shoppers offered to lift the man over the log so he could take the short route back.

It appears the tree originally fell across the supermarket’s delivery route, causing damage to bollards, before being moved to the side, in front of a pathway used by pedestrians.

Mr Foster of Walthamstow said: “How un-gallant then it was for Morrisons to only cut and clear away the branches blocking that route and not the access for this mobility impaired customer.”

He added: “When are they going to do something?”

A spokesman for Morrisons said: "The tree came down in high winds last week and we are waiting for our contractor to remove it.

“There are a number of other ways into the store, however we apologise to customers for any inconvenience."
