A cabinet member has called on Waltham Forest Council to back a people’s vote on the final Brexit deal.

Cllr Simon Miller, cabinet member for high streets, has proposed a motion due for discussion at tonight’s full council meeting.

Seconded bed by Cllr Rosalind Doré, it states Brexit uncertainty is “harming both the UK and Waltham Forest economies” and a no deal Brexit is the most likely outcome of negotiations with the EU.

He said: “No one voted to be poorer. No one voted to put their job at risk.

“The British public were lied to by the Leave Campaign, who broke election law and peddled false ideologically-led promises without any alternative plan in place.

“The referendum result is not a fixed, immovable thing that can never change irrespective of the facts that are brought to the public’s attention. The British public should have the right to weigh their options when a deal has or has not been negotiated and determine whether or not exiting the European Union is in their best interest.”

Cllr Miller quoted from a report by the Centre for European Reform that shows the UK economy is already 2.5 per cent smaller than it would have been had Remain won the referendum. This is equal to a £500million loss every week.

In Waltham Forest, the number of businesses operating has gone down by 130 from last year.

This trend is worrying councillors because before the Brexit referendum there had been “strong business growth” in the area.

Government impact reports also state the UK’s decision to leave the EU could reduce the nation’s GDP, a measure of how well the economy is doing, by up to 9.5 per cent.

Cllr Miller added: “Give the British people a vote on whatever deal is negotiated, which includes an option to remain in the European Union.

“The public should be given a final say on the most important decision to affect this country in decades, in full knowledge of the facts.”
