A Chinese group supporting elderly people across five London boroughs was invited to meet X Factor judge Simon Cowell who praised the work it is doing.

Newham Chinese Association, which caters for the Waltham Forest and Redbridge communities among others, holds social activities to reduce social isolation and teacher elderly people how to use public transport.

It is funded by the People’s Health Trust with money raised through the Health Lottery in east London.

Last week, members joined representatives from community groups across the country at the Health Lottery Tea Party at The Savoy Hotel in London, hosted by Simon Cowell.

The day showcased the incredible work that thousands of charities are doing to reduce health inequalities and better their neighbourhoods.

The event also celebrated over £100 million being raised through The Health Lottery for good causes.

Elaine Shun Ping Cheung, vice chairman, and Yvonne Chun Ping Yau, secretary, attended the party.

Elaine said: “It was important to celebrate the amazing work local charities and community groups are doing in their neighbourhoods, which wouldn’t have been possible without this money.”

John Hume, chief executive of The People’s Health Trust, said: “Thanks to players of The Health Lottery, an incredible £100m has been raised for good causes.
