A man has been charged with the murder of a pregnant woman in Ilford.

Ramanodge Unmathallegadoo, 50, of no fixed abode was charged on Tuesday, November 13, with the murder of 35-year-old Sana Muhammad.

Mrs Muhammad was eight months pregnant with her sixth child when she was shot through the stomach with a crossbow as she did the washing up in her kitchen.

The attack happened at the family home in Applegarth Drive at around 7.40am on Monday, November 12, as her children were getting ready to go to school.

Mrs Muhammad’s husband Imtiaz Muhammad said her five children who are aged one, four, 12, 15 and 17, witnessed the killing.

She was rushed to hospital where her baby – a boy – was delivered via emergency Caesarean section and is said to be in a stable condition. Mrs Muhammad was pronounced dead at 11am.

MP for Ilford North Wes Streeting said in a tweet that the attack was “deeply disturbing and distressing” and added: “My heart goes out to the family.”

Mr Unmathallegadoo appeared in custody at Barkingside Magistrates' Court yesterday and was remanded in custody.

He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Thursday, November 15.
