Redbridge councillors are calling on MPs to demand a general election “immediately” over Brexit.

Labour councillor Paul Donovan, seconded by fellow Wanstead Village Labour councillor Jo Blackman, has tabled a motion for this week’s full council meeting.

They are calling on MPs to issue a vote of no confidence in the Government and call for a general election.

Failing that, the councillors have asked that Redbridge Council support calls for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.

In the motion, the councillors state the council recognises and respects the 2016 referendum result, but point out that Redbridge voted to remain.

The councillors have asked for a no-deal outcome to the Brexit negotiations to be avoided and says: “Notwithstanding the result, this council does not believe that the people voted to be poorer, for fewer rights or risk jobs and economic prosperity.

“This council believes a no-deal Brexit should be rejected as a viable option and calls upon MPs to vigorously oppose any attempt by this government to deliver a no-deal outcome.”

The document calls the Government’s Brexit negotiations “shambolic” and calls for Labour to take over as “a government in waiting”.

The motion then instructs the council’s chief executive to write to all four Redbridge MPs requesting a vote of no confidence in the Government and to write to Prime Minister Theresa May calling for a general election.

The Conservative Group has confirmed it will not support the motion.

Cllr Linda Huggett, Conservative Group leader, said: “I think this motion has been doing the rounds at every single council meeting in the country. I would say it is regurgitation and of course we will not be supporting it.

“The council should be focusing on more local issues, they have more than enough to concentrate on and should be focusing on rather than getting involved in national politics.

“The people have voted and how many people’s votes do we need?”

But the Labour Group, which has a large majority in the council, praised the motion.

Council leader Cllr Jas Athwal said: “Of course I will be supporting the motion. Everything people were sold in the 2016 referendum was based on lies and while the Prime Minister is safe for now, she cannot get a majority in any way shape or form and we want to see some change.

“There is only one thing to do and that is to go back to the people for a mandate. After two years of negotiating, it is a dog’s breakfast.

“National politics affects everything we do, if we have a bad deal local businesses will be starting to struggle, local residents will be starting to struggle. We certainly do look at everything locally and are trying to improve the borough.

“On local level, everything is on the money, it is the national politics causing the uncertainty. We need to look at that more seriously, but by Thursday depending on what happens a motion might not be needed.”

Cllr Paul Donovan said: “There is a need for urgent action on the issue. The Government is incompetent, we have been going around in circles, the clock is ticking and it is not getting the country anywhere.

“We need to move forward. We do not like the fact that the Tories have been playing games and now it is all coming home to roost.

“We would hope to get the backing of all four Redbridge MPs, but some might be more enthusiastic than others.”
