A bricklayer has credited his strong faith for helping him trek hundreds of miles over hills and through valleys in harsh weather conditions while carrying a 25kg bag of sand.

Leo Manning Farnon has spent the past seven weeks walking alone as he patiently makes his way from Leytonstone to John O’Groats in the far north of Scotland.

The 25-year-old’s 650-mile journey began on October 1 at P G Building Supplies in Wallwood Road, who offered to donate the heavy load which Leo balances on his shoulders.

The east London native who is on a mission to raise cash for Water Aid and St Mungo’s said he has had to turn to his Christian beliefs for strength on tough days.

“On some days it’s been fine but on others I’ve really had to dig deep and look for inspiration and God has helped me,” said Leo.

“I thought I would be struggling but I’ve also learned that it takes a lot to push me – thanks to the Lord.”

“At the start I wasn’t shifting the sandbag so much but as time goes on I have been swapping it between shoulders a bit more often.

“There are a lot of knots in my shoulders and my feet hurt a bit but it’s been good knowing just how much I can push myself to keep going.

“I’ve met some really kind-hearted, loving people along the way. It’s been an amazing journey.”

Although he admits walking an average of nine hours a day has become “knackering”, he is looking forward to passing the finish line on Saturday, November 24, two weeks ahead of schedule.

The gruelling challenge is far from a holiday but Leo insists that the change of scenery has allowed him to create the mind space to generate new ideas for his future.

He has been overwhelmed by the support offered by friends and strangers alike who have put him up in their homes and stopped to hand him sandwiches after spotting him on the side of the road.

“I enjoy doing things like this to make a positive change on the world,” said Leo of Forest Gate.

“I think if people have these crazy ideas they should go ahead and do them.
