The impact Brexit will have on the people of Redbridge is set be revealed in a risk report.

At a heated full council meeting last night, a motion calling for officers to put together a Brexit risk register was passed by a vote of 45 Labour councillors in favour and 12 Conservative councillors against.

Cllr Paul Donovan and his fellow Wanstead Village ward Labour councillor Jo Blackman tabled the motion – albeit after a last minute rewording to remove a vote of no confidence in the Government.

Cllr Donovan said: “Over the past few days it has become increasingly clear that the Government is edging us ever closer to the precipice. The deal puts the country in a worse position than it presently holds.

“We have gone from a place at the table to accepting scraps that maybe thrown from that table. Or we could end up under the table. Being kicked. This is hardly taking back control.”

The newly adopted motion will see council officers assess the effect both a deal and a no deal Brexit agreement would have on local businesses and the authority.

It also calls for a People’s Vote on the final deal and instructs the council’s chief executive to write Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond demanding the Government makes funds available to Redbridge for any impacts highlighted.

But Conservative councillors accused Cllr Debbie Kaur Thiara, Redbridge’s Mayor who was overseeing the meeting, of “curtailing debate on the most pressing issue of our time” last night by not allowing more Conservatives to speak.

Defending herself, Cllr Thiara said: “There are 12 Conservative councillors in this chamber and 51 Labour councillors. I have invited three Labour representatives to speak and two Conservative. Please consider proportionality.”

Conservative group leader Cllr Linda Huggett labelled the risk register “a waste of valuable resources and officer time.”

She said: “It is our job to collect rubbish, not spew it out in this chamber tonight.”

Other Conservative councillors accused the Labour Group of trying to reverse the 2016 referendum result by calling for a People’s Vote.

But Labour members unanimously supported the idea.

Cllr Jas Athwal, council leader, said: “I will take no lectures from the other side of the chamber. The lazy politics the Conservatives practice is just incredible.

“You cannot fool all the people all the time. The 2016 vote was based on malicious lies. In any other walk of life those behind these lies would have been put behind bars.

“But their lies have been seen and they are scared those lies will lose. We need a vote based on the truth and whatever the result, we want a decision based on the truth.”

The report is due to be presented to the council’s cabinet members in January 2019.
