People with Alzheimer's have been learning to play bowls.

For the past ten weeks the bowls club in North Weald has welcomed in visitors from the Alzheimer's Society.

People with dementia and their carers have been taught the fundamentals of the game, taking to the lawn in a safe environment in which they can meet others in similar situations to themselves.

Kay Morrison, a volunteer, said: "It has been a huge success.

"For ten weeks, Alzheimer's Society has worked hard to establish the group which is now self-sufficient, organising itself, planning its future, thriving.

"The benefits are multiple, astounding everybody involved.

"Participants report an increase in confidence, physical fitness, quality of life and laughter.

"I'd planned to stay for the setting-up stage only but it’s such an amazing experience that I just can't stay away.

"We're all hooked now."
