The UK’s first independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner is set to address Woodford in January.

Woodford-based women’s organisation East London Soroptimists is organising an evening titled ‘Modern Slavery: Eradication is our duty’ which will see the former Slavery Commissioner Kevin Hyland, OBE, speak about modern day slavery and why there is a duty to end it.

The event is free, but a collection will be taken with monies given to organisations working against slavery and supporting victims in London.

President Nimrat Bains said:“Slavery isn’t just something that happens overseas, we know that London is a hub for slavery and trafficking in persons.

“Everyone needs to know about this horrible crime and how it affects the victims; victims who come from the UK as well as other countries.

“So, we’re absolutely delighted that Kevin Hyland is coming to Woodford. It’s a real honour for us to host him and a brilliant opportunity to learn about what’s really going on.”

The event will take place on January 15, 2019 from 7.15pm to 9.30pm and is free to attend, but booking is required.
