Paul Donovan tells us why he disapproved of the Leave campaign (We need to come together as a nation in 2019, Guardian, December 27). But the referendum question was not ‘Do you approve of the leave campaign or not?’ We were not asked our opinion of any policy or party or politician. There were no names on our ballot papers, no political parties.

The question was “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” This was a question about whether we wanted to stay in that political body or not. It did not mention the words nationalism, internationalism or racism. It was not about nationalism, internationalism or racism. It was solely a question about membership of one political organisation.
So, what Mr Donovan thought about the Leave campaign is irrelevant to the question we were asked. He appears still to be fighting the 2016 campaign, and still misunderstanding what it was all about.
It was never about migration policy, never about racism. It was about who makes the laws of this country, the MPs we elect or the EU, which we don’t elect and don’t control,
