The wife of Redbridge’s new mayor once lured a man to his brutal death.

Mundill Mahil, married to Cllr Varinder Singh Bola who is now the mayor-elect of the borough, was sentenced to six years in prison for grievous bodily harm in 2012 after enticing 21-year-old Gagandip Singh to her student flat in Brighton.

The TV executive was then beaten and tied up before being thrown in the back of a car and burnt alive.

Just four years after being released on licence in 2014, Ms Mahil is now the mayoress of Redbridge.

Ms Mahil is said to have rebuilt her life, becoming a personal trainer and marrying Cllr Singh Bola in 2016.

Cllr Singh Bola announced his election as the new mayor of Redbridge on Tuesday January 8, replacing outgoing mayor Cllr Debbie Kaur Thiara.

He said: “I am over the moon to be confirmed as the mayor-elect for the London Borough of Redbridge. It is an incredible privilege to step into the role of mayor following the incredible Cllr Debbie Kaur Thiara and represent the borough I love and have lived in my whole life.”

But the family of murdered Gagandip Singh are furious, saying they have been struggling to cope with the death, have received no apology from Ms Mahil and do not believe she deserves this new position.

Amandip Kaur Singh, 26 and the sister of the murdered 21-year-old, told the Daily Mail: “That woman lured my brother to a horrible death and yet served just three years in prison for it.

“She has only been out for four years and is now going to be a mayoress, through her husband, but will be afforded as much respect as him.

“She will be on his arm at official functions, where she’ll no doubt launch a charm offensive with the gathered dignitaries. But she doesn’t deserve any of it.”

Havinder Shoker was convicted of Gagandip Singh’s murder and sentenced to life in prison while Darren Peters was sentenced to 12 years for manslaughter.

Mr Singh’s body was found in a burnt-out Mercedes that had been dumped 60 miles away in Greenwich Park, south east London.

The judge who sentenced Ms Mahil described her as “manipulative, vengeful and deceitful.”

Since her release, the new mayoress is said to have launched five personal websites to advertise her positive qualities.

Cllr Singh Bola has disabled his Twitter account and his work contact number at the council has been disconnected.

Cllr Linda Huggett, leader of the Redbridge Conservative group, said: "No person that is elected should ever bring the mayoralty into disrepute under any circumstances.

"I am surprised in light of the comments in the Daily Mail that the Labour group put that person forward in the first place, but perhaps they did not know the history of that person."

Cllr Singh Bola was contacted for comment.
