'YELLOW vest' pro-Brexit protesters came to Newport city centre today for the second time this month -  and they were not short of company.

Headed by James Goddard - whose intemperate outburst towards Conservative MP and Remainer Anna Soubry outside the House of Commons, and his confrontation with a police officer, earlier this month, made unsavoury headlines - the 'yellow vests ' were closely marshalled by officers from Gwent Police.

They were shadowed too, by a group of counter-protesters who accused Mr Goddard and his fellow 'yellow vests' of racism.

The police kept the two groups apart, on either side of John Frost Square, as each harangued the other.

The 'yellow vests' gathered on the middle of the pedestrian crossing between Friars Walk and the Usk footbridge - holding their banners up on the crossing in front of traffic when the lights were on red.

Then, again corralled by the police, and with the counter-protesters tracking them, they walked through the bus station and back to their cars and the railway station.

Each set of demonstrators numbered 25-30, and police numbers weren't far short of that too.

And with officers too wearing yellow vests - albeit with 'Heddlu Police' on the backs - it was difficult at first glance to tell who was who.

Near the Queen's Hotel, Mr Goddard thanked the police "for your welcome".

"I can't say I've enjoyed it, but have a good day," he said.
