Boroughs have been named and shamed for their large inactive populations.

More people in Barnet than any other London borough do less than 30 minutes of moderate exercise a week, with 92,400 failing to reach the half hour mark according to a Sport England study.

Enfield made the fourth spot, with 73,800 inactive residents, followed by Redbridge in eighth, Harrow in eleventh and Waltham Forest in thirteenth.

Using 2015 population figures which have the total number of people living in Barnet at 379,000, one in four people in the borough are inactive.

Redbridge, Harrow, Enfield and Waltham Forest come in at closer to one in five.

Sport England is currently investing in a variety of less typical sports in order to get people active.

Earlier this month it announced £16m of funding would be given to the Angling Trust, Baseball Softball UK, the British Equestrian Federation, the England and Wales Cricket Board, England Netball and Volleyball England.

“Millions of people love sport and take part regularly and we don’t take their commitment for granted," said our executive director of sport Phil Smith. "Even the most enthusiastic people can sometimes find it hard to maintain the habit, especially when life gets in the way.

“This funding of national governing bodies is to help increase the number of people engaged in sport, through investing in clubs, coaches, facilities, equipment and new ways to play.

“Alongside this, some of our investment will support talented athletes to fulfil their potential, such as the England Netball team, who are heading in to a home World Cup this year with high hopes.”
