The community in Redbridge came together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

The service was held at Valentines Park in Ilford today from 11am to remember the millions murdered during the Holocaust and other genocides.

The theme for this year’s service was Torn from Home, with the event also marking the 25th anniversary of the Rwanda Genocide, which began in April 1994.

Those present commemorated the memory of those who had lost their lives.

Cllr Debbie Kaur-Thiara made opening and closing speeches and council leader Cllr Jas Athwal also gave an address.

The service included prayers read by Rabbi Sufrin of Chabad Lubavitch and Rabbi Hyman of Ilford Synagogue, with songs by local choirs and readings from students of Redbridge schools.

Faith leaders laid wreaths and tokens at the Holocaust Memorial Stone.

Cllr Debbie Kaur-Thiara said: “Those of all faiths came together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, to commemorate victims of the Holocaust and to reflect upon those affected by more recent genocides. It is important to remember the past to remind ourselves never to allow this to happen again.”
