The area’s MPs have been put behind bars.

Redbridge Mayor Cllr Debbie Kaur-Thiara’s latest money-raising event will see her, MPs Wes Streeting of Ilford North, Mike Gapes of Ilford South and Iain Duncan Smith of Chingford and Woodford Green take part in a jail break.

They will only be freed if they raise enough cash.

Between them, each of the inmates must make £1000 to be let out, with all proceeds going to the mayor’s charity of the year, Every Life Has a Purpose.

The three MPs and Mayor of Redbridge have raised in excess of £4500 this morning which is a tremendous boost for ELHAP a locally based constituency charity.

The not for profit is based in Woodford Bridge and provides playground equipment and support for the disabled, children and young adults.

Cllr Kaur-Thiara said: “Every Life Has a Purpose urgently needs to secure additional financial support if it is to continue providing a life-line to local families.

“They work with more than 600 service users and receive over 6000 visits each year. I am delighted to have this opportunity to help fundraise for ELHAP.

“I need to raise £1,000 in bail before I can leave so, if you can, I would be very grateful if you could give generously.”

MP Iain Duncan Smith said: "I am enormously pleased to help raise money in support of the Mayor of Redbridge for ELHAP.

"ELHAP is a remarkable East London charity changing the lives of children and adults with disabilities and those who are living in genuine conditions of disadvantage.  This is an excellent cause and I urge others to support this great cause as well.”

Every Life Has a Purpose is based in more than five acres of woodland, with an adventure playground and nature reserve.

Visiting children can get involved in adventure activities including whizzing down a zip wire, cooking on an open fire, building dens and going on bug hunts, as well as taking part in yoga, dance, drama and gardening workshops.

The charity also works with adults, helping them develop skills, connect with the community and explore their options for the future.
