People can now see plans for a key development site in Waltham Forest.

The Score Centre in Leyton is on council-owned land and is up for redevelopment with plans on show today at a drop-in session hosted by developers.

Campaigners have been asking for at least 50 per cent affordable housing on the site since last year, but detailed plans for the site are yet to be decided upon.

Cllr Simon Miller, cabinet member for high streets, committed verbally to ensuring 50 per cent affordable housing on the site during a meeting with campaign group Waltham Forest Citizens in October 2018.

At the time, campaigners included a request for Community Land Trust homes, a type of affordable housing tied permanently to income levels, to be included on the site.

But Cllr Miller could only say these would be “actively considered” as part of all redevelopment schemes, rather than definitely built there.

He said: “The council is absolutely committed to working with Waltham Forest Citizens to bring more affordable housing options to the borough and for our residents in the future.”

The council’s website states there is a “detailed plan of public engagement” scheduled for the coming months, where people will be able to have their say on the plans, but exact details of this are yet to be released.

The rough outline for the Score Centre includes new homes, shops, a cafe, a new civic square and a new leisure centre with meeting rooms and a nursery.

The existing sports facilities currently there are set to be moved to the Feel Good Too Centre (formerly Ive Farm Fields) in Leyton.

The contract for the majority of the work on the site has been granted to development company Taylor Wimpey.

A full planning application is expected to be submitted to the council in the early stages of this year.

Taylor Wimpey is running a drop in session from 12 noon until 8pm, in the Community Room, The Score Centre, 100 Oliver Road, Leyton, E10 5JY, for people to examine plans and ask questions.

Last year, in the run up to local elections, campaign group Waltham Forest Citizens set out a demand that any future development on The Score would see at least 50 per cent affordable housing.

At a pre-election hustings event, council leader Cllr Clare Coghill said the idea would be considered but the details would need further examination.

Whether that amount of affordable housing will end up included in the final plan is yet to be decided upon.
