Firefighters battled to put out three tonnes of tyres yesterday.
At 11.07pm on Wednesday the London Fire Brigade was called to wasteland in Osier Way in Leyton.
There they found three tonnes of tyres and general rubbish, which the force described as being the size of a large hippopotamus - a helpful guide for all Londoners who have seen the African mammals.
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters fought to get the fire under control, which they successfully did by 00.43am.
A small part of an adjacent recycling centre was damaged.
Fire crews from Leyton, Leytonstone and Homerton fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
