A women's group has organised for an award-winning speaker to share insight about the contribution of Indian women to the Suffragette movement.

Woodford-based women's group East London Soroptimists have organised a special event for Women's History Month involving speaker Julie Begum of the Swadhinata Trust at Woodford Memorial Hall on March 19.

In 2017, Julie Begum received the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Civic Award for Outstanding Service to the Community.

Julie Begum said: "Although popular Suffragette legend might have you believing only white women were entrenched in the cause for women’s suffrage in Britain, there were a number of Indian suffragettes and suffragists who took part.

"Most notably, Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, daughter of the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire and goddaughter of Queen Victoria, helped lead marches and played up her perceived ‘exoticness’ in order to bring much-needed attention to the movement. This Women's History Month event will shed light on some of her contributions, as well as that of the other wealthy Indian women fighting for suffrage in the 1900s to 1910s."

The event will start at 7.15pm and is free to attend but booking is required.
