A special reflection garden has been opened in honour of a school's much-loved lollipop man who died two years ago.

The Parent and Teacher's Association at Wanstead Church School held an opening ceremony on Thursday (March 15) for an area of one of its playgrounds which was developed into a reflection garden in memory of Mr Jarvis, who had helped children and their parents cross Wanstead High Street every morning for almost 10 years.

The space has been named "Derek’s Garden” in memory of the endeared 71-year-old who died following a battle with lung cancer.

The school’s PTA worked to raise the funds for the project including donations of £1,000 from Percy Ingle, £3,750 from the Aviva Community Fund and £6,000 from the Co-operative.

Headteacher Miss Marris said: "We are thrilled with our wonderful new Reflection Garden and so grateful to our PTA for all their hard work."

Mr Jarvis' widow Evelyn and daughter Sharon attended the opening ceremony and remarked that they were touched by the school's tribute.

The garden was blessed also by Reverend Canon Ann from Christ Church in recognition of its status as a quiet place for reflection in the school.
