A hospital has celebrated reaching the next stage in the construction of its new mental health and community health centre.

Thorpe Coombe Hospital in Walthamstow announced plans to build a state-of-the-art mental health and community hub in 2015 and celebrated the latest stage with a 'topping-out' ceremony.

Construction firm R G Carter is building the facility which will deliver a range of outpatient services.

To mark the milestone in the project, North East London NHS Foundation Trust chairman Joe Fielder laid the last brick on the lift and stair tower.

He was joined by North East London NHS Foundation Trust chief executive, John Brouder, Sue Boon, director of integrated care for Waltham Forest and representatives from R G Carter, Ryder Architecture, Northmores, and Currie and Brown for the event.

Mr Fielder said: "It is my great pleasure to be part of this event. North East London NHS Foundation Trust are very excited be able to offer mental health and community health services from such a contemporary environment, the modern décor is being designed to make visitors feel safe and comfortable.

"Up to date technology and the co-location and integration of mental health and community services will allow North East London NHS Foundation Trust to continue to improve the mental health and community services offer along with the patient experience. North East London NHS Foundation Trust extend their thanks to all who have taken part in this innovation."

He also announced that in honour of his predecessor, the new site will be named The Jane Atkinson Centre, who he described as a passionate mental health visionary.

Director and general manager at R G Carter John Ford said: "After months of building, the topping-out ceremony allows us to welcome staff and key stakeholders to enjoy a first look of the building as it starts to take shape and thank everyone involved.

"It has been a fantastic experience for R G Carter to work on such a forward-thinking project that will make a real difference to service users and their families."

The building is due to be completed this summer with the facility receiving patients in the autumn.
