A fire that destroyed part of a town house has been brought under control.

Around 40 firefighters and six fire engines were needed to tackle a ferocious blaze that ripped through the ground floor of a house in Brandesbury Square, Woodford Green, today.

One person managed to get out before the London Fire Brigade were on the scene at around 1.40pm.

Most of the ground floor and half of the first and second floor was damaged. 

The fire also destroyed the staircase throughout all levels of the house. 

Fire crews from Ilford, Woodford, Chingford, Tottenham and Leyton fire stations attended the scene.

There were no injuries reported and the fire was under control at 3.43pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
