People are being urged to familiarise themselves with new measures so they’re not caught out when the Ultra Low Emissions Zone comes into force.

It is just under two weeks until the Ultra Low Emission Zone comes into effect in central London and new charges are soon to be introduced.

The daily charge for vehicles entering the zone will be £12.50 for smaller cars and £100 per day for lorries, coaches and larger vehicles and will begin from Monday April 8.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is introducing the zone to clean up the capital’s air and improve health for the city’s residents and visitors.

The zone will extend to the North Circular – including parts of Redbridge – from October 25 2021 and will have a direct impact on people living in South Woodford and Wanstead.

The plan is to force older cars off the road or those that keep their older vehicles could face a charge.

The aim is to make roads in Wanstead and South Woodford some of the least polluted in Redbridge.

Cllr John Howard, cabinet member for civic pride said: “The ULEZ will have a hugely positive impact in tackling air pollution in Redbridge and help to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents by forcing older polluting vehicles off our local streets. We know how important air quality is for residents so we welcome the Mayor’s scheme that will drastically improve London’s air.

“We are also doing our bit to tackle air pollution as a council by making it easier for drivers to swap diesel and petrol cars for more eco-friendly versions by installing several on-street electric vehicle charging points and pledging to introduce clear air zones around our schools to encourage more people to walk, cycle and scoot to school.”

Council leader, Cllr Jas Athwal, added: “This is a key step forward in the fight for our children’s health. Pollution is causing long term damage across London and it’s our responsibility as a council, and as members of the community ourselves, to do everything we can to protect our environment and mitigate the impact of pollution has on local children.

“I’m proud to work with local schools and the Mayor of London to protect the future of our great city and ensure local children grow up in a cleaner, greener environment.”

The Mayor of London has also launched a scrappage scheme (click here: https://protect-eu.mimecast.com/s/h-ZYCQnxxsgGBxqUxHk_6) to support small businesses and charities as they prepare for the arrival of the ULEZ.
