Children dressed as their favourite storybook characters when they read to elderly people at a care home.
Pupils from Normanhurst Primary School visited the Spinney care home in Chingford on Saturday, May 4 as part of celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of Children’s Book Week - an annual celebration of books designed to help foster the joy of reading.
Pupils reading extracts from their favourite books while staff from the school joined in by dressing up too.
Children also voted for their favourite book – won by The Gruffalo, while a poll of care home residents after a 'reminiscence' session was won by Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
Senior carer Lisa made a fabulous replica of the famous tarts from the book and 91 year old resident Audrey read an extract from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to the children.
Sam Gladwell from the school said: “It was wonderful to see the residents and the children interacting so well - and with everyone enthusiastically discussing books. Encouraging children to read is so important and events like this help enormously."
