An uncle whose five-year-old nephew died from cancer will be remembering the youngster in a special way.

Shane Wakeling, from Watford, will be cycling 950 miles across the UK for ten days to raise money for a charity, after losing his nephew Freddie to brain cancer.

Freddie was given a 40 to 50 per cent chance to live after he was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma in July 2017.

The family discovered the terrible news shortly after his younger brother Arthur was also diagnosed with a brain tumour in March 2017.

For the majority of 2017, Freddie and Arthur spent a lot of their time in and out of Great Ormond Street Hospital for cancer treatment.

At one point, doctors discovered Freddie required a 10-week treatment programme which was not available in the UK – so the family hastily worked with the NHS to transport him to the US for Proton Beam Therapy.

Fortunately, Freddie was able to return in time for Christmas and spend the festive day with his family.

While signs seemed promising, a later MRI scan revealed a secondary brain tumour which had to be removed. Shortly after the removal, the tumour returned, and the hospital helped Freddie’s family prepare for an end-of-life care plan.

Mr Wakeling said he felt helpless during Freddie’s suffering.

In memory of his nephew and to help other children with cancer, he plans to raise £8,000 for Alice’s Arc, a charity dedicated to researching and treating Rhabdomyosarcoma.

Mr Wakeling said: “Cancer Research UK last year spent £474 million on research, but sadly only 1.4 per cent of that made its way to children’s cancer. This makes raising money for Alice’s Arc and the search for a cure to Rhabdomyosarcoma all the more important.”

Mr Wakeling plans to cycle 950 miles from Land’s End, Cornwall to John o’Groats, Scotland between August 3 to 12.

He added: “It won’t be an easy challenge for me – at 6ft 3in tall and 21 stones – I’m more built for playing second row rugby! The hardest bit will be recovering from a 90-mile day, then getting up the next day and the next, doing it all over again. But I’m excited by the challenge, and the memory of Freddie and everyone’s generous contributions will spur me on to get to John o’Groats.”
