A woman who allegedly caused two RAF jets to divert and escort a plane due to "extremely disruptive behaviour" has been given an £85,000 bill.

The Jet2 flight from Dalaman, Turkey, was redirected back to Stansted Airport on Saturday, June 22.

Chloe Haines, 25, from Maidenhead, Berkshire, was arrested on suspicion of common assault, criminal damage and endangering an aircraft and received a lifetime ban from the airline.

It is believed that the 25-year-old attempted to open the plane doors during flight, resulting in her being restrained by staff and passengers.

The incident caused the RAF jets to create a sonic boom which was heard by residents across Epping Forest, Harlow, Chelmsford, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.

Several people from Loughton, Chigwell, Debden and Epping took to social media saying the loud bang caused homes to shake, fearing an explosion had occurred.

Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: "Miss Haines' behaviour was one of the most serious cases of disruptive passenger behaviour that we have experienced.

"She must now face up to the consequences of her actions, and we will vigorously pursue to recover the costs that we incurred as a result of this divert, as we do with all disruptive passengers.

"As a family friendly airline, we take an absolutely zero tolerance approach to disruptive behaviour, and we hope that this sobering incident, with its very serious consequences, provides a stark warning to others who think that they can behave in this fashion."

Essex Police also reported that they had received 202 phone calls from across the county in one hour following the explosive sound at around 6.40pm.

Ms Haines has since been released on bail until Wednesday, August 21.
