Schoolchildren created lily pads and built a snail as part of preparations for a grand art exhibition.

St Saviour’s School in Verulam Avenue, Walthamstow, put on the exhibition to mark the opening of its new Art Hut on Friday, July 12.

As part of activitites, pupils created lily pads inspired by the work of Impressionist painter Monet and built a snail based on the painting by Expressionist artist Matisse, as well as a drawing masterclass from Year 1 teacher and professional artist, Mr Sam Silva.

Paintings, collages, 3D work and films created by pupils were displayed in a school arts exhibition.

Kerry Bullock, the teacher who organised the event, said: “We’re passionate about pupils having a chance to express themselves through art and for those who, given the chance at school, might recognise a talent which opens up a future in the art, design and creative industries when they grow up.”

The event encouraged both parents and children to get involved in a range of artistic activities including: creating lily pads, building a Matisse snail and a drawing class from teacher and artist Mr Sam Silva.

Head teacher Mr Lemouchi said: “The staff put in a huge amount of effort to produce this exhibition and the artwork was of the highest standard. It was a wonderful community event.”
