The owners of a shopping centre that caught fire in Walthamstow have launched an appeal for employees who were affected.

Over 100 firefighters and 25 fire engines spent over four hours tackling the fire at The Mall shopping centre on Monday, July 22.

No injuries had been reported.

Following the fire, owners Capital and Regional have pledged to support those employed at The Mall who were negatively affected by the fire.

It donated £25,000 to a Just Giving page set up by their partners retailTRUST, which supports retail employees and their families throughout their lives.

Waltham Forest Council also showed their support by donating £10,000 to the Just Giving page.

Lawrence Hutchings, CEO at Capital & Regional, said: “We are working very hard to provide help and support to those experiencing hardship as a result of the fire, including this partnership with the two foremost charities in our sector to offer additional financial and emotional assistance.

“Our priority is to have the centre fully operational again as safely and promptly as possible.”

Richard Boland, Chief Executive of retailTRUST added: “Following the fire in Walthamstow, we are working closely with Capital and Regional to provide as much support as possible to both the individuals affected and the retailers themselves.

“The initial response to these unforeseen events is a need for emotional support and counselling for individuals affected.”

Cllr Clare Coghill, leader of Waltham Forest Council, said that the council were “delighted” to donate £10,000 to support people affected by the fire.

She said: “In doing so we hope to be able to further the financial and emotional support to those people that desperately need it.”

The Fashion & Textile Children’s Trust, which offers financial grants to UK fashion and textile employees, is also supporting the appeal.

Anna Pangbourne, director of the trust, said: ““FTCT is delighted to be part of the Walthamstow Appeal and are really keen to reach families in the Walthamstow area whose financial situation has been negatively affected by this devastating event.”
