You can get a free lunch at an event which will give tips on how to reduce food waste and save money.

North London Waste Authority is running a series of seven 'Waste less, lunch free' events.

People will be able to watch live cookery demonstrations and sample delicious food made using ingredients that would have otherwise been wasted.

Free tasters include vegetable curry, veggie frittatas and summer fruit pancakes. There will also be an opportunity to talk to experts about reducing food waste and saving money.

According to the waste authority, one third of all food produced is lost or wasted globally. This ranges from leftovers on plates and bags of wilted salad in our fridges, to stale bread or bunches of bananas left to turn black in fruit bowls.

The average family could save £810 per year if they reduced the amount of food they waste. For the average person, the value of food wasted is estimated to be £230 each year.

Some of the events have already happened. The remaining events will be held in Camden, Waltham Forest and Enfield:

  • Camden, August 15 - Queen's Crescent Market, Queen's Crescent, NW5 4HH
  • Waltham Forest, August 29 - Walthamstow Town Square, High Street, Walthamstow, E17 7JN
  • Enfield, September 7 - Fountain Island, The Town, EN2 6LE

Councillor Clyde Loakes, chair of North London Waste Authority said: “Food waste is a big problem in the UK and one that has a real impact on our environment.

“These events are a really good way to highlight the amount of edible food that gets thrown away each day.

“I hope lots of north London residents will enjoy these ‘Waste Less, Lunch Free’ events and take away some money saving food waste reduction tips.”
