An area said by campaigners to be “at breaking point” from anti-social behaviour could see greater powers granted to officers to clamp down on crime.

Councillors and residents have been calling for a public space protection order (PSPO) to be put in place in Chingford and Highams Park for months.

Waltham Forest councillors Selina Seesunkur and Jemma Hemsted last year called for a PSPO for the green spaces at The Mount, Albert Crescent and Memorial Park, saying street drinking and anti-social behaviour had become commonplace.

This was initially rejected by the council as it said there was not enough evidence of the need for a PSPO in the area.

However, earlier this year a street cleaner was attacked in South Chingford and since then the councillors have renewed their calls for a Chingford PSPO.

The order would allow council officers and police to issue on the spot fines to people caught littering, street drinking, begging, failing to pick up after their dogs and for any other anti-social behaviour.

Now, the council has opened a public consultation on the issue to hear whether or not people living in the area would like to see the new powers implemented.

A proposed protection order has been drafted and is available on the council’s website for residents to look at.

The website shows various maps of proposed areas that could be included under the order.
