It was go-go-go last week as racers descended into Watford to compete in a one of a kind championship.

The UK Slot Car championship was hosted at the Nascot Wood Slot Car Club on the last weekend of August, where 40 racers aimed to take the crown at the two-day event.

In what is a more professional version of Scalectrix, slot car racing sees competitors equip their cars with suspension, proper racing tyres and adjustable braking.

Racers also have to make do without a magnet to hold the car in place, with skill and patience needed to take victory in a commonly underestimated sport.

Marc Abbott, 59, is a committee member at the Nascot Wood Slot Car Club.

He said: “It's nothing like racing Scalextric cars around on the living room floor.

“It usually takes around six months for people to get good at this."

The event saw classic sports car raced on the Saturday whilst modern GTs cars were raced on the Sunday.

It was hosted by Italian company NSR, who sent over prizes for the winners at the Slot Car championship.

Mr Abbott added:“We had to turn people away because there were so many people wanting to race.

“It was an excellent few days and people came to Watford to enjoy the event."

The club meet every Friday to race their slot cars at the Nascot Wood Club. To find out more click here.
