A former MP has been accused of ‘mansplaining’ after he incorrectly pointed out what he believed to be a grammar mistake by Diane Abbott.
Mike Gapes, a former Labour MP for Ilford South, unsuccessfully tried to correct the grammar of a tweet shared by Diane Abbott, an MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington as well as Shadow Home Secretary.
At first, Ms Abbott congratulated Jeremy Corbyn on the Labour conference on Monday (September 23) where Labour rejected plans to currently back 'remain', as he instead made it clear that Labour will only back a position after a general election takes place.
So @jeremycorbyn Brexit position triumphed at @UKLabour conference this afternoon. The message is, despite the chatter from commentators, the party is determined to unite behind its leader.

Mr Gapes, who resigned from the Labour Party after fifty years to stand as a candidate for the Independent Group, was angry at the decision made by Corbyn.
While the original tweet by Mr Gapes is now deleted, screenshots of the blunder shows that he incorrectly suggested that the ‘l’ in ‘leader’ should be capitalised.
Mike Gapes just tried to correct Diane Abbott's grammar... except she was right and he was wrong. Good job Miwk. (Now deleted) @MikeGapes pic.twitter.com/OGAGXl2gPy

As per usual, Twitter users went on the social platform to commentate on the situation, with some people calling it a moment of ‘mansplaining’:
Mike Gapes mansplaining English grammar and getting it 100% wrong.

Others joked about the grammatical blunder:
Lol.. Looks like @HackneyAbbott was a better student than @Mikegapes at @Cambridge_Uni #prorogue

While some tweets made fun of the grammar used, others were wrongfully laughing at the use of "it's", as they believed it should have been "its".
@MikeGapes you deleted your(not you’re) mini grammar lesson to @HackneyAbbott which she didn’t need! But looks like you do so here’s a helpful visual- thank me one day 😀 pic.twitter.com/odmMYlHWtZ
