YOUNGSTERS at a Woodford Green school tried their hands at a combination of rugby and baking to raise money for charity.

Pupils at St Aubyn’s School took on the two fundraising challenges on September 26 and 27.

The first challenge, a rugby themed obstacle course called the 400 Try Challenge, pushed middle and senior school students to their physical limits.

The young athletes raised over £6,000 for the NSPCC during the challenge which coincided with the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The second challenge, organised by the school council, was The Great St Aubyn’s Bake Off.

Pupils were invited to showcase their skills learnt in food technology classes and share to produce a batch of six identical cupcakes.

The cupcakes were judged on taste, decoration and creativity and a prize was awarded to the best in each year group.

The cakes were then sold at a coffee morning, raising £1,180 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mrs Slade, senior school council lead teacher, said: “We were overwhelmed by the response of the children and delighted by the quality of the cupcakes they produced.”
