Nobody who uses the roads in Watford can have missed the recent misery. Trials of new street lights, crashes or even a bit of rain can bring the town to a standstill.

And with thousands of new homes due to be built over the next few years, many are wondering how much more the town can cope with.

Then there is the unspoken determination by politicians to put us off using cars by building homes without parking, and create schemes like the cultural hub that seem to plan for fewer cars, but without any well publicised strategy to give us an alternative.

Amid all the pre-election spending announcements, nobody has announced billions in spending on buses, or anything much.

Until now.

Elected Mayor Peter Taylor this week announced three ways to get us out of our cars. A cycle-hire scheme, a minibus you can dial up with a mobile phone and an app telling users the best way to get from A to B.

These are all very good, but will the minibuses, bikes and tech cope when thousands move in?

We hope there is more on the way.
